Sokha Chan
KHMER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Sokha Chan is the Executive Director of the Khmer Community Development (KCD), an NGO dedicated to improving the quality of life of the Khmer and Vietnamese people in Cambodia, especially in the provinces bordering Vietnam. The organization educates and empowers local communities to tackle environmental, health and nutrition issues. It employs sport and art, including theatre, to foster inter-ethnic peace and address Sustainable Development Goals. The KCD consists of about 30 permanent employees and about 40 young members of the Peace Club section.
I got involved with the KCD in 2015 when the organization was seeking to apply methodology of theatre to boost its core activities (within a Civil Peace project of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). As we worked together in challenging conditions, and thanks to a natural understanding on a personal level, we have remained in close touch year-round and cultivated our friendship. This lead to repeating collaborations on several projects deployed ever since. Currently (2019-2020) we work together on the Growth project organized by the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe. Additionally, the experiences from Cambodia and personal friendship with Sokha inspired my production Theatre That Does Not Save Nations And People scheduled to premiere in Berlin in 2020.
